Volunteer Opportunities:

Drive Our Shuttle!

The Gift of Life Howie’s House is currently seeking dedicated and reliable Volunteer Shuttle Drivers to help transport individuals and materials for The Gift of Life Howie’s House. As a Volunteer Driver, you’ll provide a valuable service to our community by ensuring transportation needs are met in a safe and timely manner. This role is essential in supporting our mission and helping guests get from the House and to their respective hospital for medical appointments and visiting hours. Additional support may be asked based on your availability.

Requirements
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Background check for a clean driving record.
  • Comfortable driving a Ford Transit van (no special license needed).
  • Capable of driving in the city: Ability to safely navigate city streets/highway stretches, use GPS if needed, and through morning/afternoon rush hours in a calm manner.
  • Good Communication Skills: Ability to interact politely and professionally with guests, volunteers, and staff.
  • Flexibility: Because of the nature of our guests’ circumstances, there is always a possibility that a ride may be canceled at the last minute due to a medical emergency or sudden change in plans. This may occasionally result in arriving earlier than necessary to start a shift or going to a pick-up location that is no longer needed. Our House staff does everything possible to minimize these situations, though they cannot always be avoided.
Time Commitment
  • Morning/AM Shift: 7am-11am
  • Afternoon/PM Shift: 3pm-6pm
  • On Call for AM and/or PM: You will be contacted when a shift becomes available within your specified availability. If you’re able to take the shift, wonderful! If not, there will be no negative impact on future opportunities or outreach.

Example Support Needed:

  • Transporting Guests: Safely transporting guests, patients, and/or families to and from medical appointments at one of the 7 transplant centers, The Gift of Life Howie’s House, or designated destinations.
  • Material Pick-Up/Delivery: Picking up donations from Stuff the Shuttle events or event materials to and from various locations as asked/needed based on individual availability.
  • Event Support: Assisting with the transportation of event-related items or volunteers to and from event venues as asked/needed based on individual availability.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Ensuring that the Gift of Life Howie’s Hose vehicle is clean, fueled, and well-maintained for every trip.

Help around the House!

The Gift of Life Howie’s House is currently seeking enthusiastic Guest Service Volunteers to support our staff with various operational and development tasks. Volunteers may also be invited to additionally assist with special events and projects, depending on availability and interest.

Time Commitment

1–3 hours per shift, flexible between 8am-8pm.

Example Support Needed:

  • Mailing/Shipping Support: Preparing mailers by adding information to envelopes and applying mailing and return address labels.
  • Administrative: Preparing information folders, paper cutting projects, filing, inputting non-sensitive information, inventory management, etc.
  • Pantry Assistance: Stocking the community pantry with donated items from storage.
  • Donation Organization: Sorting, organizing, and storing wish list donations.
  • Guest Tours: Assisting staff with giving tours of the House for visitors.
  • Event Preparation: Supporting event prep by stuffing favor bags, assembling decorations, organizing name tags, sorting raffle prizes, and other related tasks.
  • Library Organization: Organizing and managing book donations in the House’s library.
  • Activity Center Maintenance: Assisting with the organization, sanitation, and upkeep of the Activity Center.
  • Custom Support: Additional tasks tailored to your preferences, strengths, and the House’s needs, based on individual skills and availability.
The Gift of Life Howie’s House is currently recruiting for evening volunteer kitchen specialists to help provide a great experience for the Home Cook Heroes groups as well as serve a nourishing meal for the guests. Additionally, for nights when there are no Home Cook Heroes groups, Kitchen Specialists are needed to assist management and staff with all aspects of serving and cleaning up meals.

Time Commitment
3:45pm – 8:30pm most needed, can be flexible for brunch and baking shifts.

Support Needed:
  • Welcome and Check-in Home Cook Heroes Groups
  • Give overview of Gift of Life Howie’s House mission
  • Provide Home Cook Heroes and kitchen orientation including food safety standards and program reminders
  • Give direction and provide support to Home Cook Heroes in kitchen as needed with regards to:
    • Filling out required paper work
    • Questions
    • Ensuring groups are following proper procedure and guidelines
    • Identifying location of kitchen supplies
  • Take group photo
  • Once dinner has been served, take group on a tour of the facilities and review importance of donor designation
  • Assist in clean-up and proper food storage
  • Thank group for their time and support, remind them to fill out the Volunteer Satisfaction Survey
